Host a National D.E.A.R. Day Celebration!
Mark Your Calendar: April 12, Beverly Cleary’s birthday, is National D.E.A.R. Day. Add this date to school, library and other promotional calendars and encourage families to find 30 minutes to Drop Everything and Read.
Make Your Participation Official: HarperCollinsChildren’sBooks and its National D.E.A.R. Day partners want to support your efforts to promote the importance of setting aside time for reading into a family’s busy schedule. Schools, libraries, bookstores and other organizations planning to host special events can pledge to participate and be entered into a random drawing to win books and exclusive promotional items.
Promote National D.E.A.R. Day and Your Celebration: Get everybody reading! Download the Save the Date and Sample Media Alert templates and spread the word in newsletters, e-mails, and to your local newspaper. Even if they can’t make it to your local D.E.A.R. Day celebration, you still want everyone to Drop Everything and Read on April 12 wherever they happen to be.
D.E.A.R. Parents: Families are the focus of National D.E.A.R. Day. Clue parents in to the April 12 celebration early and remind them often. Use the reproducible flyer to launch your campaign through backpack mail, PTA newsletter, or library handout. Encourage ongoing D.E.A.R. activities at home before and after April 12 with tips for family reading and suggested reading lists.
Invite Guest Readers: The goal of National D.E.A.R. Day is to show families how to make time to drop everything and read. Important members of your community and local celebrities who make time to read at your event can help motivate others to read and share the joys of reading together.
